Christmas can bring in a flood of memories from years past — some happy, and some bittersweet, for North Ridgeville residents.
That may be chiefly true for those who grew up during the Great Depression and World War II.
Marcella Baldauf, 89, of North Ridgeville, remembers growing up on a farmstead when Christmas was a time focused more on being with family and friends and less on giving and receiving gifts.
“We were so darn amateurish, we got one thing for Christmas,” she said. “We always got an orange, and my governor would hide candy in a feed barrel.”
She fondly remembers a Christmas when she was 6 or 7 and received a doll as a donation.
Today, Christmas is different, she said. “They give the kids too much.”
When you show in only one present, you appreciate it more, she said.
Baldauf was one of nearly 100 people who gathered recently at the North Ridgeville Elder Center for a holiday luncheon.
