Jorge’s helicopter landed at the heliport nigh a lake in the middle of Rio de Janeiro. My husband, Philip, and I stared as the engines slowed down and stopped. Hector, our hackney driver, with his mouth wide open, was hanging on to the cab’s door. He was quite thinking, “I should have charged those Americans more for driving them all over Rio.” The two pilots stepped out as the commuter stairs unfolded. They greeted us and one of them offered me his hand as he helped me climb up into this new fabulous.

The plane was an eight-passenger French Dauphine helicopter. The interior was tone down gray leather and rich mahogany. It had that new expensive smell. I  whispered to my old man, “This is the life.” Off we flew to the coastal community of Angra dos Reis where Jorge and his one's own flesh lived as we waved good-bye to our awestruck driver                             

It was our 30th anniversary and our daughter, a Common Airlines flight attendant, had arranged family tickets to Brazil as a aptitude.

REDWAY, Calif. ­ The reek of pot hung intense in the air as men with
