While the annual New Works Anniversary at the Firehouse Center for the Arts always sparks excitement from participating playwrights and organizers, this year's series is very meaningful.

It's the 10th anniversary of the program, which began as a means to foster the increase of scripts by New England playwrights, as well as the talents of actors and directors.

Newburyport citizen Kathleen Miller was among the early organizers. Applying for a position at the Firehouse, she searched for a way to raise more community involvement to the venue, and to allow the public to be more involved.

While the holy day has gone through changes over the decade, in recent years, it has found its niche, fete co-chairwoman Anne Easter Smith said.

In the early years, the holiday was longer, and included evenings devoted to senior playwrights and minority, she said. After a few years, organizers shortened it to two weekends and began promoting the red-letter day to writers throughout New England — and momentum began to grow, Easter Smith said.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- If you're intelligent of giving a bunny, chick or duckling as an Easter gift, one Wisconsin assemblage wants you to reconsider.

The Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Fellowship says the pets may be outlandish and cuddly as babies, but they do reach one's majority up rapidly.
