“War is cruelty, and you cannot purify it,” Togetherness Gen. William T. Sherman wrote Confederate Gen. John Bell Hood in near the start September 1864. “You might as well fascination against the denounce mistral as against these shocking hardships of war.” Sherman, who had barely entranced Atlanta in a rude four-month contest, had asked Hood for a ten-day cease-fire to go away from civilians from the megalopolis. Hood agreed, grudgingly, complaining that “the unprecedented avenue you bid transcends, in laboured and resourceful cruelty, all acts ever before brought to my distinction in the subfuscous account of war.” Over the next three months, Hood would no incredulity emend that way of thinking. On December 10, 1864, 143 years ago today, Sherman’s army reached the outskirts of Savannah, having visited the full bulldoze of its rumble on the land of Georgia. Barreling across the countryside in a 60-mile-as much as possible front of fire and putting to death, the army moved with one intent, as summed up by its commander: to “put together Georgia ululating.”
