Q: My jocular mater has a large watercolour of a river scene in Dartmoor, England. The artist is William Widgery (1822-1893). My grandmother bought it at an English auction about 1925. It measures 61 centimetres by 183 centimetres (2 by 6 feet). Miserably, it’s no longer in its original gold leaf frame.

A: Widgery didn’t go far from his about in Exeter to find the setting for this panoramic watercolour. Surprisingly, Widgery trained as a stonemason and was a self-taught artist. He was inspired by Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (1802-1873), a celebrated Victorian painter who specialized in stags set in misty wilderness landscapes as well as captivating barnyard animals. Widgery, a contemporary of Landseer, skillfully copied his profession and soon discovered he could make more money as a gentile artist than at the sweat of cutting stone.

Your picture is extremely large for the difficult medium of watercolour. But other than its philanthropic format, it is a typical Widgery landscape. In this desolate scene both the teeny-weeny cattle and the miniature herder accentuates the vastness of the landscape and unclear hills. The expertise of the brushwork and the size of your painting are special. The missing pattern is unfortunate. Still, this Widgery is worth $3,000.
