Not surprisingly, retail and shipping Web sites saw jumps in shipping during December, but so too did tax sites as users strated looking past the sabbatical season to those tax returns, according to comScore.
Retail sites saw a 20 percent development in traffic overall during the month, reaching 43.8 million visitors, comScore said in a Monday description. The top-gaining retail categories for the month were movies, jewelry and security merchandise, goods and accessories, and flowers, gifts, and greetings.
"The furlough shopping season continued with strong momentum in December as Americans worked to span everyone off of their list in time for the holidays," Jeff Hackett, executive wickedness president of comScore, said in a statement. "Shipping sites were heavily trafficked as consumers tracked their packages, while some found age to browse tax sites as they closed their books for 2011."
Shipping sites were visited by 36 million Americans during the month, an boost waxing of 22 percent compared to November. UPS topped the category with 20.3 million visitors, an addition of 31 percent, followed by USPS sites, FedEx, and Stamps.com.
