The personnel at Prairie Five Community Act Council Inc. is thankful the winter has been mild so far.
The private non-profit categorization founded in 1965 to meet the needs of local communities in a five-county extent has experienced financial difficulties in its heating assistance and nutritional aid programs this year.
Prairie Five serves pastoral communities in Big Stone, Swift, Chippewa, Lac qui Parle, and Yellow Prescription counties, with heating assistance, home delivered and congregate meals for individuals over 60, victuals pantries, and second-hand shops. It is funded through state and federal grants, and eremitical donations.
"Our mission statement says we're working together to meet the needs of townswoman communities," said Associate Director Gail Jerve.
Jerve confirmed Prairie Five's nutritional program is nearly $15,000 over budget for 2011, though she won't know exactly how much until March 2012.
"In August 2010, we submitted a bid to the Minnesota River Close Agency on Aging (MRAAA) on what it would cost to provide services in 2011," Jerve said.
