Carnal Care Services revisited a West Side property where it seized 53 roosters a one of weeks ago and impounded nearly two dozen more Thursday afternoon.
A kick to police spurred an investigation at the property in the 1200 block of Southwest 35th Row. Investigators returned with a search warrant around 4 p.m. Thursday and took 22 reside roosters from chicken houses in the backyard.
“We believe, in fact, some were being picked to oppose in the near future,” said animal cruelty expert Audra Houghton of ACS.
Investigators also confiscated items they said were linked to cockfighting.
Multiple people were confused in the cockfighting operation, she said, but any charges will be determined later.
In a break up case, the Bexar County Sheriff's Office on Jan. 15 bankrupt up an apparent cockfighting ring off Loop 1604 in Southwest Bexar County, seizing 140 subsist roosters and 20 dead ones.
While most cockfighting busts have been in the county, Houghton said she expects more within borough limits now that a stricter state law is on the books. As of Sept. 1, it's unauthorized for individuals to attend cockfights or to own combat roosters and paraphernalia. Getting caught in the act is no longer required for prosecution.
